Interplanting raspberries
I’m planting new raspberry beds. Is there anything I can plant under/between the plants or should I leave it bare? They’ll be in raised beds

Intensive planting
Something I've always wondered is how strict do we need to be with plant spacing, specifically the space between rows? I get that to get a carrot to grow to the desired size, I'm going to want about an inch or two of space between it and it's neighbour so it can root in peace and get enough light, b...

Pruning sour cherry bushes
How do you prune sour cherry bushes, the type from University of Saskatchewan? I've just let mine go so far, and seem to only find pruning advice to trim away broken branches and desired shape, and otherwise let them go for optimal production. I'd like them to stay small-ish, for easy picking, but I...

Brand new garden beds
We are actively digging up our entire property and putting in new grass, perennial tree/flower beds and a large in ground garden patch for vegetables. I'm wondering how best to start the soil going this year, and how to layer it. My initial thoughts were regular top soil (that will cover everything ...

Re: Apple Tree Posts with the Trees right beside the post
Check out this company. They have an INCREDIBLE selection and are super helpful. They deliver to the mainland and ship bare root trees for I think the same price, so if you're ordering more than 1 tree it's a pretty good deal (ask your neighbours if they want some too). I have little self control ap...

Re: Quince in my backyard - a surprise!
I was gifted some quince two years ago and made the most beautiful quince paste and quince and riesling jelly, which was such a treat on crackers with cheese. The old world flavour was pretty special. I hope you enjoy!

Growing with minimal sun in the winter
My main garden area that I have is completely shaded in the winter from about late October to March, as the sun hides behind the trees at the back of my property. If I plant overwintering cauliflower, will it just sit dormant during this whole time, and then head up when the sun starts coming back t...

Fine black dust on garlic
I'm finding a lot of my garlic has a touch of black dust on the skins, sounds like it's likely aspergillus. Is it still safe to use if it's not on the garlic cloves themselves? Do you still use them? I'm reading some pretty conflicting advice. I'm planning to make garlic confit and garlic powder whi...

Re: Crop rotation
We have been growing our tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers in the same growing area for years without problems. We often grow potatoes and garlic in the same areas for a few years as well. Healthy soils keep things in balance and pests and disease can be kept in check. Healthy soils have the full spe...
