Re: Pumpkins/squash not growing
Thanks, I was wondering if that was the problem. For the existing squash that are still small I could probably dig them out and replant removing the undecomposed substrate and adding some nutrient rich compost. Worth a try since they look like they’ll fail anyhow!

Pumpkins/squash not growing
Hi there, I last year I did a 3 sisters bed, and this year in the same spot I added new compost over the overwintered bed (overtop leaves and some straw). It’s been unusually cold/damp spring on south vancouver island, but my squash are way behind this year.I’ve got pole beans again planted with the...

Re: Rain water storage
We have 2 rain barrels that are backed up to our chicken coop and have gutters running with a down spout directly into the barrels. They're so small and we have very wet times here (Z 8b). Same here! For others considering, I found this calculation helpful from the CRD website for those on the Sout...

Re: Fencing
I had a client a couple of years ago that claimed that in our wetter climates, concrete is not the best for posts as it traps moisture in the socket that is formed between post and concrete. He was adding road mulch gravel (3/4 inch with fines mixed in) and tamping it around the hole as he filled i...

Re: Fencing
Hi Kristin, I have been using 8' spaced utility grade 4x4 cedar, and 7' field fencing wire around 1/4 acre. Have run a coated wire clothesline along the top and through the posts for extra top rigidity. One trick I have used is wrapping at least the top 6-10" of the post in contact with the gr...

Ideal soil for new trees
Hi there, We’re excited to be adding 3 sweet cherry trees to our home garden. We’ve got a spot with well draining soil and full sun. The trees we’ve purchased are bare root, and arriving next week. I’ve been told the root is about 12” cube. We’ve dug holes probably 2’x2’x3’ deep, and might do a bit ...

Re: Reviving an old Thermophilic Compost
Thanks Andrew. I’m in a similar situation however I don’t see any white fungus, but I have regular and red wiggler worms. It’s been a pile I’ve added on to for a couple of years, but I’m still finding some not broken down items (leaves, clumps of grass, woody stalks). Yesterday I decided to try and ...

Re: Taking a plant-positive approach to pests
This was super helpful, I tried growing sprouting broccoli in 5 gallon buckets last year and had a huge aphid problem. Thanks! I’ll have a look at that book and authors.

Fencing
Hi there, I’m curious about your suggestions for the best fencing (and low cost). We need it to go up around the perimeter of our large garden, be 8-10 ft in height, permanent, and able to keep out bears, deer, and rabbits. So far we’ve been using treated wood posts with chicken wire set in the grou...
