Remove weeds from an existing garden bed
This patch of existing garden is about 20 by 10 feet and has been used for a veg garden but tends to have a lot of weeds. Crab grass, dandelions. The garden is surrounded by grass. It is clay based soil. I would like to convert to a no dig garden. I would put down cardboard and then top with about 5...

Re: Buying compost
I am going to reply to my own questions - BUT would still appreciate any comments that provide further insight - 1. I did buy 3 cubic yards of this compost and it was delivered yesterday. It met the touch, smell and look/color test recommended by Andrew in one of his compost videos. The compost did ...

Buying compost
I have been shopping for compost. One long standing local company has compost that has been aged for 2 years, uses chicken and horse manure (some straw in it) and wood chips. They say they also do lab tests and try to keep Ph near neutral. They suggest spreading only up to 2 in on soil because it cr...

Re: Organic fertilizers
Thanks for your comments but as I mentioned in my question I am looking for a more technical response about the content of these products and the impact they have on the soil.

Re: Organic fertilizers
Hi Thanks for comments but I still have an outstanding question. I am just curious about what is wrong with organic fertilizers such as GAIA 444 - Does it cause problems > for the microbial life in the soil, is it less effective etc. I have switched to my own compost/ vermi compost but am just curio...

Organic matter/ mulch breaking down into compost
Last fall I added some new raised beds and used lasagna method of soil and organic matter/mulch layering.
How long does it take for the layers of organic matter/ mulch (mostly leaves) to turn into compost in situ?

Re: Mulch not yet broken down for planting
Jack in your response could you please explain why you think it is not necessary to add any compost? Sorry I find the whole discussion on this confusing. In the module on compost the suggested step is to add a layer of compost every year and then add mulch to protect the living soil. The mulch seems...
