Bokashi leachate

Hi there, I've got two different bokashi buckets sitting; one since April and I closed off the other about a month ago. I think the leachate can be used as a fertilizer if very diluted. Is the ration 100:1 water to leachate? The bucket contents of the first one don't smell much at all, but the leach...

Re: How much leachate is typical?

That to me seems a bit on the low side. When I last asked Andrew about this he reminded me that it is a flow-through system so quite difficult to make it TOO wet and also that worms like it quite wet so he had me watering my bin more often. Thanks for that. What sort of amount do you get (give or t...

How much leachate is typical?

Hey Andrew, Is approximately 1 litre of leachate every week to 10 days a typical amount? I finally measured the amount I am getting as I have been wondering if my bin is too wet. The worms all seem happy and are busily getting through all the food I give them. Thanks!

Re: Irrigation system

Dan is absolutely right about using a timer for irrigation—it sure simplifies the work load for home gardeners. Since we start many of our transplants from seed in the house where it’s warmer much earlier in the season, we aren’t as concerned about surface moisture for germination, hence the buried ...

Re: fava beans fall planted

Good morning. I’m also in Victoria: ‘rain, rain, go away…’! I’m no expert on fava beans (my few attempts have been lovely smorgs for the aphids), but if there is some green growth, I might consider letting those ones continue on a bit longer and see what happens. They may come back, given how hardy ...

Re: Hello from Eastern WA!

Hi Colby and Hilary, Welcome! And congratulations on your property acquisition! As an aged and veteran (but not necessarily ‘learned’) gardener who has signed up a second time for this course, I can guarantee you will learn so much from the instructors as well as other members of this community. It’...

Re: Succession and relay planting under cover

What you are doing with your greenhouse sounds great. I have an unheated greenhouse in my garden in North Vancouver, 6x12 in size, and I am not very successful with it. Can you send us some pictures on how you’ve constructed the beds and planted it and some tips on your success please? Thank you. I...

Re: Irrigation system

Hello I have about 2 long raised beds surrounded by in-ground garden beds. I’m new to setting up an irrigation system. Any suggestions on what type of system I should use and where I should start? I find it all very overwhelming. Also with little ones, I would think the network of tubing the irriga...

Re: Hungry Bin mixing?

I’ve had my hungry bin less than a year, so I’m no expert, but I can say that the worms find their food as soon as they (and the food) are ready for each other. For me, it seems like I can add some nearly everyday and if it’s warm enough and the food is chopped finely enough, within a week the worms...

Re: Succession and relay planting under cover

Hi there, our winter temps in the greenhouse range widely! If there’s sun during the morning, the temps can get up there (from 4 outside to 18 at 1300 hours today), but then quickly drop back down again to very similar temps to outdoors. What this greenhouse does is keep the salt spray, the cold win...
