Can you recommend some good mulching materials?
You recommended wood chips (partly broken down, mixed with mushroom manure) and leaves. Would you use sawdust? Do you find certain organic materials that would make poor mulch (pine needles?)

Re: Crop rotation
We have been growing our tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers in the same growing area for years without problems. We often grow potatoes and garlic in the same areas for a few years as well. Healthy soils keep things in balance and pests and disease can be kept in check. Healthy soils have the full spe...

Re: Fighting a maple tree
Ah, sigh, I wish it weren't so! :) Thanks Jack. I had no idea about root pruning and its effects. Do you think even digging the trench deeper and putting some sheet of metal as a vertical barrier in the trench is just a losing battle? If I do the root barrier with raised bed, what kind of soil depth...

bean shoots all eaten
So, this has happened 3 years running now. I've got a garlic bed (about 10'x12') and I have to water it (drip irrigation) right until I pull the garlic in July because the hoses are connected to another bed that needs the water (I hope to change that next season). The garlic is covered in a thick st...

Fighting a maple tree
So I've got my garden on a corner lot in the city. The picture is facing due north. This maple tree is to the east of the garden and it's obviously been getting bigger every year. My greenhouse is movable (annually) between two terraces. It's currently up on the eastern terrace and in October I'll m...

Germination issues
So, I know that parsnips have a lower germination rate, like carrots, but I have tried 4 years in a row and I get a pitiful germination rate - even from new seeds (WCS gladiator). They're definitely not drying out. Would it be better only to cover the seeds with a bit of peat moss or something light...

Re: Hungry Bin startup
I'm thinking of keeping the bin out in my garden rather than at the house. I imagine that it's fine to throw weeds (incl. with potential seeds) into the bin. Is that right?

Re: Transplant health
The vermicompost in the tray did the trick, and quite quickly as you suspected! Thanks!

Transplant health
I've noticed that the last few times I've started brassicas the leaves start to turn yellow and purple once they have 2-4 true leaves. Any idea why this might be? I've got them under lights I use soil blocks and have them in a seedling tray (like from the garden shop, but more rigid, and I can water...
