Using a broadfork in no till
It has been suggested to me that part of the reason my garden did so poorly this year is soil compaction. Is the use of a broadfork compatible with no- dig gardening?

Storing leeks for the winter
Any suggestions on how best to store leeks for the winter? Cold storage, freezing? I will mostly be using them in soups. Thanks!

Storing beets and carrots for the winter
What is the best and easiest way to store beets and carrots for the winter? I have a cold room that is at 54F right now but will get colder as the temperatures drop here in northern Ontario. I have read about packing them in sand but that sounds messy and where does one get sand? I need something qu...

Re: Weeds/horsetail
Thanks, Jack, for your comprehensive reply! I think I will persevere with the weeding and get some compost on the existing site for now. Our growing season here in Northern Ontario ends in September so at that time I may put cardboard down with some sort of mulch for the winter in hopes of smotherin...

The snow is finally melting here in northern Ontario and I have discovered a few trees which appear to be old apple trees (this property is new to us). They look to be long neglected. Should I attempt to prune them now before ...

Wood Ash
Hi. We heat our home with birch wood and therefore collect a lot of ash. Can this be added to our soil or compost pile?

Hi from Thunder Bay Ontario
Hi. My name is Sheila. Until last fall I lived in the city of Thunder Bay, in a big house in a nice neighbourhood with four raised beds in the backyard and my attempts at raising food were abysmal. Then last November, sort of on a whim, we sold the house in town and moved to an acreage 45 minutes ou...
