i'm going to start my bokashi system... what is the larger blue drum used for?

Bokashi composting is an anaerobic process that converts food wastes into an amazing soil amendment.

after watching your module A section 3.3 video on making bokashi compost, i'm going to start my bokashi system with buckets. we live in an apartment complex and this would be ideal for food scraps. what is the larger blue 30 gallon drum used for? also, where can i buy the bokashi microbes from?

Hi Troy, I started last week and am already at 1/2 a bucket...the larger blue drum is an option for storage by dumping the smaller bucket into it as you will almost certainly run out of space. Another option is to take the full bucket, pop a lid on it and start a second or third, and placing the full lidded ones in storage until you can use them in the spring. The blue barrel would be pretty heavy to manhandle once it is full.

thx for the reply jack. so, just to clarify... we can use a larger container and store usable bokashi compost for future use, but only after it has gone through a fermentation process in the smaller 5 gallon bucket. did i get that right?

that's right Troy. The blue drum should still be airtight though. I think a confusion in the video might have been that the contents or the large drum were fresh looking.

We dumped the contents of making a bokashi system into there in between takes so it looks a little fresh on the top. The drum would normally look like the other smaller bucket shown in the video.
