hello everyone,
my name is troy and i live in richmond with my wife and son. because we live in an apartment complex, space is limited for growing plants. however, my mother, who lives in burnaby has graciously allowed me to make use of part of her backyard for gardening.
i started cleaning up the yard during the summer of 2020 and finally finished building all the structures around early april 2021, just in time for the growing season. the soil was less than ideal for growing plants and was heavy in clay, full of large and small stones, and i rarely saw any worms. it was basically hardpan that was dug up for a swimming pool.
prior to 2021, i had zero experience growing plants that produced edibles. i joined a local online fb gardening group and watched youtube videos to help me get started. in an attempt to inject life into the "dead" soil, i mixed in about 3 yards of mushroom manure and a few 5 gallon buckets of okara, and much to my surprise, we actually did better than we had anticipated...
i'm delighted to be here and learn!

Hey Troy! Welcome to the course! I think you made a wise choice by finding some land somewhere to get started on. Its not always ideal but the experience you get is worth its weight.

WOW!! What an amazing change! Very inspiring! Well done!
i have my mom to thank for it. it was win/win because i cleaned up her backyard and she shared in our bounty of fresh fruits and veggies.
thank you... i worked on it whenever i could. i built this 3 stall shed from reclaimed pallets... currently, it holds dry brown leaves and some gardening tools, but i'm thinking about using one stall as a vermicomposter... btw, these pics were from april 2021 and are not current because the whole garden is covered in snow atm...
