I have seen a few videos on growing mushrooms (for culinary purposes) using various methods including in wood chips. Has anyone purchased local mushroom spores? Did you have success? The videos I have watched have been from “north spore” however it’s an American company and shipping was going to be expensive.

Hey Jordana,

I've read and watched a lot of mushroom growing videos as well and I've decided to try wine caps (Stropharia rugoso-annulata) as they grow in wood chips instead of needing logs and drilling holes to put the spawn in. And the beds seem fairly low maintenance with a good success rate and chance of them becoming perennial. I can't reccommend a specific supplier as I haven't grown them yet but there were a few Canadian supplies that I found.

Paul Stamets's video on growing and cooking wine caps in the garden was great because he walked through his garden while picking them so you could get a sense of how they grow. I'll have to check back in with an update later in the season. Good luck!

Hey Steph,
Thanks for the recommendation. I think I am also going to try wine caps as well. I found these two suppliers locally (Vancouver island and Abbotsford) if you are looking to purchase.

Hopefully we both can harvest some this fall!
