Has anyone transplanted their onions in clumps of 4? I'm looking at the Eliot Coleman method (I didn't start these onions in soil blocks like he does but in a flat tray) they are suppose to push away from eachother as they grown while also reducing weeding. I had started them in a grid pattern but then came across this other method so trying to decide what way to go.

I haven’t tried onions this way but I am trying beets,
radishes and spring onions in clumps this year. Charles Dowding also does it this way (with onions too 4-6 in each clump). Seems to make sense to me, efficient and space saving. I would go ahead and try it, I will be too!

We used to do onions in clumps of 3-4. We switched to individuals to give a more uniform yield with larger onions. This is important for us going to market. But for a home gardener it's probably not so planting in clumps make a lot of sense.
