Re: fava beans fall planted
I second this question :) I've planted favas for two seasons, sowing in fall and spring. Neither attempt produced a hearty cover crop or a food crop (although last year's early spring planting -- which did not germinate until nearly 2 months later -- did end up in seed ripening... for maybe 6 pods)....

Re: Succession and relay planting under cover
Hi there, our winter temps in the greenhouse range widely! If there’s sun during the morning, the temps can get up there (from 4 outside to 18 at 1300 hours today), but then quickly drop back down again to very similar temps to outdoors. What this greenhouse does is keep the salt spray, the cold wi...

Re: Calculating how much food to grow
Hi everyone, Thanks for the leads and conversation! You’re right, there will be quite a bit of trial and error and depends on taste. I would definitely need on the higher side of potato plants! I’ll also plan for an experimental garden of fun things I want to try. For the design, does that mean wit...

Re: Succession and relay planting under cover
Hi Jack and Dan: Nice new video around planning/layout of the beds; it will be most helpful! Thanks! Jack, you mentioned putting up a greenhouse over a few of your beds and wanting to grow basil--I've had lots of luck with it here in Victoria in my unheated greenhouse (south wall removed during the...

Re: plastic-free bokashi?
Hmm, thanks. I appreciate the concept of re-use and if we had sources of secondhand plastic buckets, I'd be open to that. (But not buying a specific lid...) The thought of using a glazed ceramic crock makes me gasp at the thought of sacrificing tasty fermentation space :D but if I find a lonesome po...

Re: Crop rotation
oooooo what are some of the perennial veggies you're growing? I'm hoping to incorporate a bunch into our landscaping outside my veggie garden but finding it a bit tough to know what to go for Oh, it's fun here because the PNW has lots of options, both native and non-native. I find it helpful to thi...

Re: Crop rotation
Seconding this question, please! This aspect of permaculture is hard to navigate, at first. I'm building in a high proportion of perennials, including perennial vegetables, into the garden, and it's not always easy to figure out where to handle the annuals. So in addition to Deb's question about bed...

Re: Sea-90
At first thought, one package-free alternative for those with coastal access would be seaweed (in itself and with its associated sea salt residues). Andrew, any comments on mineral profiles or application methods, directly vs. into composting systems? It's important to check your local regulations f...

plastic-free bokashi?
I'm hesitant to purchase and use plastic for bokashi-style compost production, given the multifold environmental impacts of plastic. Given bokashi is akin to silage, can we effectively create the desired anaerobic conditions with other materials or in another way? I'm thinking of options like tradit...

Re: Bokashi, bears and winter storage
Amazing, thanks Andrew! Good to know Peas, I'll keep that in mind. Many bears have been killed in my town/neighbourhood because they've been too accustomed to garbage, people etc so we try to be extra bear smart. Bears destroyed our corn crop at a neighbours garden a couple years back, so I won't g...
