This is my first year gardening. (This is also my first time stepping into a forum so I hope I am doing this correctly!)
I set up a vermacomposter back in March using established compost as the base and adding red wigglers and then fresh compost as the months have gone on. I don't know how to tell when it is safe to open the bottom up to take out compost material to add to my garden. I am afraid of having it all fall out on me. How long do you have to wait if the original material was composted (got it from the Local Harvest farm to set up for the worms).
Thank you for any input.

did you get a hungry bin? if so, i made the mistake of removing the bottom tray to check and the soil fell out! it's been about 4 months since i've had the hungry bin in production and i haven't removed it yet. i'm likely going to wait until next year because i have no need for vermicast at the moment...

Its pretty much safe to open after you notice the top "drop" down a few inches. This generally occurs in the first couple of months. At 3 months I'm pretty sure you're safe to open it up and do a harvest!
